Presenting Igneo Sardão

Our newest collection, born during our Portuguese winters.

For the fourth time, we spent the winter in Portugal.

Life in Belgium is both hectic and exciting. We live intensely and are always "on".

In Portugal, we turn inward. We follow a different rhythm and lifestyle, finding our “vagar” here. We view this as a residency for ourselves. The simplicity of our life in Portugal creates space in our minds – for focus, energy, and new ideas.

Lisbon by Design felt as the right place and moment to unveil the result of these residencies in Portugal.

“IGNEO SARDÃO”

a sculptural chair and side table in one

At Lisbon by Design, we’ll be presenting the Igneo Stool — a multifunctional sculptural piece that serves both as a chair and a side table.

The base is handwoven by Tucurinca, while the cushion is crafted by the Portuguese weaving company Fabricaal. We’ve also incorporated a tabletop made from recycled plastic, produced by the Brussels-based studio Bel Albatros.

We’re passionate about multifunctional design. As living spaces become smaller, pieces that serve multiple purposes are not only practical but also future-proof. For example, by simply placing the cushion next to the stool, you instantly create a cozy, personal corner. Meanwhile, the table itself works beautifully as a side table, whether on a patio or in a living room. And in it’s entirety It’s a true eye-catcher — the kind of piece where just one is enough to elevate an entire space.

Bringing together these diverse elements reflects the essence of what we do as a studio. At the heart of our studio lies the 'CO' philosophy — a belief in the power of collaboration across design, production, communication, and presentation. 'CO' stands for co-laboration, co-design, co-thinking, and co-producing. This mindset enables us to cross borders — not just geographically, but across traditions, materials, and techniques. We believe that by working together, we can generate the best ideas and draw upon each other’s strengths to create the most thoughtful and refined designs.

We created five distinct cushions for the Igneo collection, giving you the freedom to mix, match, and make it your own.

For these handwoven cushions we joined forces with Fabricaal. Fabricaal is one of the most unique and artisanal weaving companies in the world. Their wooden looms are primarily operated by craftspeople over the age of sixty. The company was taken over five years ago by three creatives from the region, who had previously built international careers. Their decision to return home and invest in their roots is deeply inspiring. They’ve preserved traditional craftsmanship while gently steering the company toward a more innovative future — creating contemporary rugs, poufs, and blankets without losing touch with the community.

This marks our first collaboration with Fabricaal, and it certainly won’t be the last — we already have many more ideas in the pipeline.

The tabletop from Igneo Sardão is made from recycled plastic, produced by the Brussels-based studio Bel Albatros. We were triggered by the sustainability and transparency of their production, as well as their commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Their product brings the recycling of waste composite materials to the forefront and provides a starting point for action. The sheets are attractive and colourful, and they’re used for purposes similar to what you can achieve using ceramics or marble.

With us, the new generation of designers looking for eco-materials appreciate recycled plastic, because it is a responsible material that is accessible and has technical properties suited to several types of use: waterproof, acid-proof, UV-resistant, rot-resistant, can be polished, heat-formed and welded, machinable…their plastic is the talk of the town!
