This chair CADEIRA begins with the idea that every spiral starts around a hand. The hole—an imprint of the maker—is accentuated by the organically shaped metal backrest, marking where the chair comes to life. The rhythm of the metal elements follows the stitching technique, shown here raw and exposed, reconnecting it with its plant-based origins. 

MACHEIA takes its name from an ancient unit of measure—the size of a hand. The studio was founded in 2020 by Italian-German product designer Lucrezia Papillo and Mozambican-Portuguese architect Iany Gayo. Their work focuses on natural fibers, ancestral techniques, and their continuity. 

Ranging from storytelling objects to performative installations and private commissions, MACHEIA explores the meeting point between craft and material.
